Rosacea

rosacea with redness in face.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition affecting the blood vessels in the face. Rosacea is a common problem for older adults and seniors and can be due to an accumulation of environmental and sun exposure and other factors. A diffuse red rash develops from damaged blood vessels in facial skin.

Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea

The main sign of rosacea is a red rash which spreads across the center of the face, covering the nose and other areas. Skin may also feel hot and painful. The skin on the nose may thicken and appear swollen. Bumps containing pus may also be present. The eyes may also be irritated and dry.

Rosacea Risk Factors

Rosacea affects both adults and seniors, so risk increases if you are over 30 years old. Women and fair-skinned individuals have an increased risk of developing rosacea. Smoking and having a family history of rosacea also increases rosacea risk.

Triggers Which May Cause an Outbreak of Rosacea

There are several factors which can trigger an outbreak of rosacea, including eating spicy, hot foods, drinking hot beverages, or drinking alcohol. Exposure to temperature extremes and wind can also increase trigger rosacea.

How Your Dermatologist Can Treat Rosacea

There are several professional treatment options your dermatologist may recommend, including a focused skincare regimen combined with medications. Laser therapy, such as intense pulsed light therapy or IPL, dermabrasion, antibiotics, and anti-redness topical medications may also be recommended to help manage rosacea.

What You Can Do to Help Prevent Rosacea

You need to protect your skin, both from sun damage and to prevent rosacea. Remember to:

  • Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
  • Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 if you have fair skin, freckles, or you sunburn easily
  • Try to stay out of the direct sun between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM, when UV rays are most intense
